798ArtZone,orDashanziArtDistrict,isapartofDashanziintheChaoyangDistrtrictofBeijingthathouseesathrivingartisticmunity,among50-yearolddmissionedmilitaryfactorybuildingsofuniquearchitecturalstyle.itisoftenparedwithNewYork'sGreenwichVillageofSoHo.
Theareaisoftencalledthe798ArtDistrictorFactory798althoughtechnically,Factory#798isonlyoneofseveralstructureswithinaplexformerlyknownasJointFactory718.Thebuildingarelocatedinsideallreysnumber2and4JiuXianQiaoLu(酒仙桥路),SouthoftheDaShanZIFlyover(大山子桥)。
TheDashanzifactoryplexwasvacatedataroundthetimewhenmostofBeijing'scontemporaryartistmunitywaslookingforanewhome.Thedistrict'spopularityhasexplodedsincetheopeningofBTAPand798Spacein2002,withscoresofgalleries,lofts,publishingfirms,designpanies,high-endtailorshops,andcafesandfancyrestaurantssettingup.In2003,around30artistsandorganizationshadsetupstudiosorofficesinthearea,with200morereportedlyonthewaitinglisttomovein.Inkeepingwiththearea'smunityspirit",mostgalleriesinDashanzidonotchargeeitherexhibitorsorvisitors.Instead,theygenerallysustainthemselvesbyhostingprofitablefashionshowsandcorporateevents.DashanziisnowacenterofBeijing'snascent"BOBO"(bourgeois-bohemian)munity.
798艺术区，或称大山子艺术区，是由北京国营电子工业老厂区的名称沿用至今。同时，798也指代这一艺术区引申出的一种文化概念，以及LOFT这种时尚的居住与工作方式。从2001年开始，来自北京周边和北京以外的艺术家开始集聚798厂，，他们以艺术家独有的眼光发现了此处对从事艺术工作的独特优势。他们充分利用原有厂房的风格（德国包豪斯建筑风格），稍作装修和修饰，使其成为富有特色的艺术展示盒创作空间，并发展成为画廊、艺术中心、艺术家工作室，设计公司、餐饮酒吧等各种空间的聚合，形成了具有国际化色彩的“SOHO式艺术群落”和“LOFT生活方式”，而且进入798艺术区参观是不需要门票的。现今798已经成为了北京都市文化的新地标。
